One day, I got a message from a customer saying all the colors were wrong, asking for advice! You can imagine my surprise when I opened the screenshot and realized the pages were in dark mode. As it turns out, Notability lets you toggle any PDF into dark mode right inside the app. Since I occasionally get requests for planners with dark backgrounds, I was excited to test this feature out myself. So if you've ever wondered what it would be like to use a digital planner in dark mode, now you can find out without buying a separate product! You can switch back and forth anytime, and even your handwriting and typed text adapt with it, turning light in dark mode and dark again in regular mode.
How to Use Dark Mode in Notability
Notability also refers to this feature as “Content Matches Theme,” which allows your planner to adjust based on whether you’re using a light or dark Notability theme.
1. Choose a Dark Notability Theme
From the Notability Library:

Open Settings.

Select Appearance.

Choose one of Notability’s dark themes, such as Dark, Dark Blue, or Jet Black.
This changes the appearance of the Notability interface.
2. Make Your Planner Match the Dark Theme
Next, open your planner in Notability:

Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner.

Select View Settings.
-
Turn on Content Matches Theme.
Your planner pages will now adjust to match the dark appearance you selected.
Make Dark Mode Follow Your iPad Automatically
You can also have Notability switch between light and dark appearances along with your iPad.
From the Notability Library:

Open Settings.
-
Select Appearance.
-
Turn on Content Matches Theme.

Turn on Match System Appearance.
Now, when your device switches between Light and Dark Mode, Notability can follow along automatically.
What Will My Digital Planner Look Like in Dark Mode?
Because The Elegant Planner is imported into Notability as a PDF, turning on Content Matches Theme can change the way the planner’s colors appear on your screen.
Images that you add to your planner separately—such as imported PNG stickers—may behave differently from graphics that are already part of the planner PDF.
